Diamonds Reflected Block- Moogly CAL 2024

I love starting the New Year with the Moogly CAL! (Check out all the blocks for the year here). If you are new to the CAL check out Moogly’s version of this block, and her notes here.

Diamonds Reflected Block will seem a bit wonky until it is blocked, so do not get discouraged early on. The other thing that will help with the “wonkiness” is to ensure that you are pulling the long loops up to the height of the working row. If these loops are too short they squish the fabric down and cause puckering.

I was inspired to work the Diamonds Reflected during my family’s trip to the Grand Canyon just after Christmas. It was my first time to visit, and it is an inspiring place. I was even swatching up some ideas for this block with flying in a helicopter over the North Rim. And yes, I was looking out the window too. Fortunately I don’t have the seat with the glass floor…my husband had that…I don’t know how well my “I don’t have a fear of heights” statement would succeed in that seat.

If you want to follow along in my journeys join my monthly newsletter here, or join one of my classes.

Mélange Blanket CAL- Yesteryear Rose

I am so excited to start the year featuring my square design, Yesteryear Rose, for the Mélange Blanket and Underground Crafter Mystery Crochet-A-Long! It is always fun to join a Blanket CAL!

The Mélange Blanket Mystery Crochet Along is a great project to learn new skills and check out the work of 48 different designers…while being able to win prizes. There is a new 6″ block releases every week, and our host, Underground Crafter keeps everything flowing smoothly. Check out all the details here: Underground Crafter

My contributing 6″ block came along this year due to a textured project I was working on this fall. I was to create a textured design in the round. This led to playing with post stitches, and marrying in some techniques from overlay crochet. By working in the back loops, and leaving the front loops unworked gave new ways to explore playing with colors. So some clusters and tall stitches help me to make up this floral design.

Honestly, I love how this block came out. It reminds me of older wallpaper or fabric prints. I have been playing with putting different colors in the A, B, C positions, and any working a small throw up for myself. Something I don’t do all that often.

I hope you enjoy it!

You’ve Got Options- Diamond Star Square

What fun to be part of the You’ve Got Options CAL! This is a project that actually has 2 different squares, different sizes, but built upon each other. If you have missed any of them, please check out all the opportunities here.

For my part I worked a square that utilizes carrying your throughout the project, crocheting over the color you are not working. This allows for some specialized color changes without having to weave in a bunch of ends.

A little insight

It also uses a process that creates inverted V’s, by using front post double crochet stitches that are worked together. These may be new techniques for you, or stitches you may not work often, so I offer some detailed information about them, and recommend reviewing it before beginning the squares. If you want to understand more about post stitches, both front and back are used in this design, I share some insight here.  To understand more about how to work decrease stitches, I share some tips here.

After you complete the smaller 6″ square, you then really put this square on its head, by moving the corners to the sides. This causes the square to rest on its point.

Square measures 12” x 12” (at end of Round 6, square measures 6” x 6”)

The wrong side of the Diamond Star Square

Deborah’s Diamond Square

Thank you for joining me for my Moogly CAL Square! As a time of year of giving thanks, I am very thankful to be invited to participate in the project, and I hope you enjoy my contribution as the last square for the year.

If you are unfamiliar with The Moogly Yearly Afghan CAL, you can learn more about this project, learning a new 12″ square every 2 weeks, here at Mooglyblog.com.

I tend to like a little different angle in my squares, hence to rotation to create a diamond in the center. This square changes colors every round, but you can create it in many different color configurations. As for the name of this square, Deborah is a long time student, and supporter of my crochet career. She makes a point of sharing her love of baking with all the other students at the weekly crochet classes I teach at my local yarn store, and is always encouraging to everyone. So the name is another sign of thanks.
