However only recently I have learned the benefit of actually taking a crochet class.<\/p>\n<p>My first class was at a Crochet Guild of America (CGOA) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knitandcrochetshow.com\/\">Chain Link Conference<\/a> (aka Knit and Crochet Show) in July 2011, with <a href=\"http:\/\/krwknitwear.com\/\">Karen Ratto-Whooley<\/a> on Savvy Singles, learning new approaches to single crochet stitches. (This conference changed my life, but that is a story for another day)Usually I read through class listings and think \u201cI have seen that in a book, what else they can be showing me\u201d, but after taking this class I realized that there are more than the words in a pattern or book that created my hobby. Being in a room of fellow crocheters getting more detailed instruction then I thought was possible was an eye opening moment.<\/p>\n<p>The designer doesn\u2019t talk about the inspiration or thought process behind a pattern in any book that I\u2019ve found, but in the class I was hearing the \u201cbackground\u201d of how the stitches work and the dynamics of how they work with the pros and cons of each stitch.\u00a0 The fellow students offered more then I would have thought by bringing up questions I would have not considered. Even after crocheting for nearly 30 years, this old dog was learning new tricks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_122\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindadeancrochet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_20121023_165749.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122 \" alt=\"IMG_20121023_165749\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lindadeancrochet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_20121023_165749-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lindadeancrochet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_20121023_165749-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.lindadeancrochet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_20121023_165749-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lindadeancrochet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/IMG_20121023_165749.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">5 Peaks Shawl class by Vashti Braha at Fall 2012 Chain Link, Reno<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This experience has encouraged me to take a handful of classes every year, and the new ideas and concepts that have opened up new worlds to me. (The 5 Peaks Shawl by <a href=\"http:\/\/designingvashti.com\/\">Vashti Braha<\/a> gave me a whole new outlook on Tunisian Crochet) Just because I knew the stitches, could read a pattern and complete the fabrics I desired, I didn\u2019t realize there was another world within the one I knew.
